Chewing gum and adhesive residue creates a sticky mess that is challenging to remove and attracts dirt. You can solve both of these stains with simple techniques. Apply 1 TB of peanut butter to cover the sticky stain. Allow to sit for approximately 10 minutes. Use a clean sponge dampened with water to rub away the peanut butter and softened gum.
Following the removal of as much of the sticky stain as possible, use a clean non-abrasive sponge to wash the area thoroughly with mild dish soap and water. Rinse thoroughly with water and wipe dry with a clean dry cloth such as a soft dishtowel. If you use a paper towel, pat dry rather than rub to prevent scratching your floor.
For trace amounts of sticky gum or adhesive residue on a vinyl floor with matte-finish use a white, sulfur-free eraser or melamine eraser to remove the mess by rubbing gently. Use a soft brush and dustpan to remove the eraser/gum material.
For vinyl floors with a glossy finish, you may want to use alternative methods as the erasers could create scuff marks or otherwise damage the gloss. Use a clean soft rag to apply cooking oil, rubbing gently to dislodge and remove remnants of gum and adhesive. Use a clean non-abrasive sponge to wash the area thoroughly with mild dish soap and water. Rinse thoroughly with water and wipe dry with a clean dry cloth such as a soft dishtowel. If you use a paper towel, pat dry rather than rub to prevent scratching your floor.
Caution: Do not use ammonia on vinyl floors as it is corrosive to vinyl. Never mix cleaning agents or chemicals, the result can be dangerous or deadly. Before cleaning, always test the agent on an inconspicuous location to determine its suitability and to make certain it does not damage the material. Wear appropriate clothing such as gloves and protective eyewear, and work in a well-ventilated area. Accidental inhalation or ingestion of cleaning agents can be hazardous and even fatal, particularly to pets and children.
